In 2012, Mónica ran for the new NYS Senate District 46 which was created in 2011 by the Legislative Task Force Commission. Mónica ran as an
Independent Democrat looking to represent the people. She ran a grassroots campaign focusing on the need to bring our elected officials accountable to the people who elect them.  She was not, however, successful in her bid during the Democratic Primaries.  During her time campaigning Mónica expanded her network greatly, learned about the needs within the district, and learned much about the campaign process.  In the future, she looks forward to helping others, including the Latino community, who want to run for office.

In 2008 Mónica was appointed as Delegate-at-large for Barack Obama.
She was heavily involved  and served as Treasurer for the Albany for Obama/Coalition for Change, an independent grassroots political action group that supports progressive candidates for office. The group funded and supported an all volunteer effort organizing over 130,000 calls by over 1,000 volunteers, sent hundreds of volunteers to key swing states, raised over $100,000.  The group sent hundreds of letter to undecided voters and registered over 2,000 new voters.
